Before you begin working in Australia, it’s important to get a few things organised to ensure everything runs smoothly once you start your job.
The most important thing is making sure you have the right visa. If you plan to work while in Australia, you’ll need a Working Holiday Visa – you can’t work on a tourist visa. Make sure to check all the requirements and eligibility criteria before applying.
To work in Australia, you will need an Australian bank account for your employer to pay your wages into. Luckily, there are plenty of options, and which bank you choose really depends on your personal preference. To open an account, all you need is your passport and proof of an Australian address (this could be from a backpacker hostel, a friend or family member’s place, or even a post office). You’ll also need a Tax File Number (TFN), but don’t worry if you haven’t received it yet, it can be sorted out later.
Some of the most popular banks for international travelers are:
Your TFN is an essential ID number that allows you to work legally and pay taxes in Australia. You’ll need to provide it to your employer and submit a tax return each year by the end of June (the financial year’s end).
You can apply for your TFN online through the ATO website, in person at an ATO office, or by calling 132 861.
If you’re planning to work in Australia, getting your TFN is a must. The good news is that as soon as you’ve applied, you can usually start working right away, just show your employer the proof of the application document they give you.
Lastly, update your CV with your most recent work experience so it’s ready to share with potential employers. Make sure your contact details are up to date too, including your Australian phone number, so employers can easily reach you.
As backpackers ourselves, we know how challenging it can be to find work while travelling Australia. That’s why we’ve created an exclusive opportunity to help you earn money on the road. Through our Travel Hub Ambassador Program, you can earn cash by referring fellow backpackers to book their trips with us.
Do you have your own social media page or travel blog? You can use it to promote our campervan search tool on your chosen channels. Every time someone books through your link, you’ll earn commission – a simple way to earn money while travelling in Australia.
If you’re looking for regular work to fund your living or travels in Australia, there are plenty of ways to find opportunities. One effective option is to visit venues in person and hand in your CV, giving you a chance to showcase your personality. If you prefer searching online first, we recommend using the Backpacker Job Board to find work that suits you.
If you’re from certain countries, you’ll need to complete 88 days of regional work to qualify for your second-year Working Holiday Visa. This could include working in a café in a remote area or picking fruit on a farm. Visit the website below to learn more about the regional work requirements and which types of work qualify. You can also check with your employer before starting to confirm that your work counts toward the requirement.
