Top Things to Do In Magnetic Island:

From hiking the Forts Walk to diving amongst the Yongala Shipwreck, there is something for everyone on Magnetic Island. Here is a list of our top recommendations for Magnetic Island!

Wildlife Experience at Roamer:

Whilst visiting Magnetic Island, you need to visit the hostel, Roamer. This hostel on Magnetic Island has an on-site wildlife park where you can see wombats, crocodiles and most importantly cuddle a koala. They also have a daily bird feeding at 4:30pm where you can hand feed rainbow lorikeets. The hostel is surrounded with wildlife and you can often see wallabies jumping through the grounds. It’s the best place on Magnetic Island to be immersed with wildlife.

Snorkelling and Diving Tours:

Magnetic Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef, so there are plenty of opportunities to do either snorkelling or scuba diving. If you are a certified diver, you need to make sure you check out the Yongala Shipwreck, it’s one of the top dive spots in the world! You can also snorkel straight off the beach at Geoffrey Bay or Nelly Bay, where they have snorkel trails planned out for you. Keep a lookout for giant clams on these trails! You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see colourful coral and plenty of fish.

Forts Walk:

You have to make sure you check out Forts Walk while you are staying on Magnetic Island. It’s just a short 1-hour hike, but trust us when we say this is something not to be missed. The hike takes you through the Magnetic Island National Park, where you can see some of the WWII fortifications left behind on the island. On top of that, you have breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and an aerial view of the whole of Magnetic Island. The best part of the trail is you get to spot plenty of sleepy koalas in the trees surrounding the hike. And nothing beats seeing the Australian wildlife out in the wild!

Barbie Car Hire:

Magnetic Island has so many hidden beaches or epic hiking trails to discover, so hiring a car makes sense, right? Well, it certainly does when you can hire a roofless Barbie car to cruise around Magnetic Island. It provides the perfect Insta moment, so make sure to snap a picture. If a Barbie car isn’t your thing, they have plenty of other roofless cars in different styles! How can you say no to taking a road trip around paradise!?

Frequently Asked Questions:

You simply take the ferry from Townsville to Magnetic Island. The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes and operates throughout the day. Alternatively, you can also take a scenic helicopter ride from Townsville Airport to the island.

There are two hostels on Magnetic Island; Nomads and Roamer. If you’re looking to party, Nomads is good as they host pool parties and games nights every day of the week. The rooms are huts situated right on the beach. However, if you’re looking for more of a chilled-stay, Roamer is the way to go. Either way you are going to have a great time!

No! The great thing about Magnetic Island is that unlike most of the other islands down the coast (i.e. Whitsundays Islands and Fraser island), you don’t need to book a tour. You only need your ferry tickets and accommodation. We actually have packages that include accommodation, ferry tickets and car rental for 2 or 3 days.

Magnetic Island is beautiful and has so much on offer. We recommend staying for 2 or 3 nights, which is definitely enough time to see everything – especially if you rent a car!

The ferry takes only 30 minutes from Townsville and they depart every 30 minutes, from 5.00am to 7.00pm. This will cost about $40 for a return ticket without a vehicle.
