Cairns isn’t just about reef and rainforest. There’s another side to this neck of the woods that’s well worth getting excited about, and for this one, you’ll need a little courage.
In return, you’ll be rewarded with absolutely stunning views of the region from a completely different perspective, a god-tier adrenaline rush and an experience you’ll never forget.
We’re talking, of course, about taking the ultimate plunge with some world-class skydiving and bungy jumping experiences!
With tropical islands scattered along the coastline, mountains covered in lush rainforest and some seriously spectacular scenery, Cairns is an incredible place to take the leap. Quite literally.
Whether you’re jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet or throwing yourself off a 50-metre tower in the middle of the rainforest, these are the kinds of experiences that stay with you for a lifetime, whether you’re a local or just passing through.
And the best part? You don’t need any previous experience. Just a little courage and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Skydiving Options
Little old Cairns has some pretty big wonders right on its doorstep. We’re talking the world’s oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef (which can be seen from space) and, believe it or not, one of the biggest skydiving operators in. the. world.
Setting the standard for skydiving adventures, Skydive Australia has a team of experienced professionals ready to, ahem, jump to it and give you the experience of a lifetime, with three incredible locations to choose from across Tropical North Queensland and the Whitsundays.
And seriously, where else in the world can you experience those first two natural wonders from thousands of feet in the air, all in one unforgettable adventure?
Cairns: Reef, rainforest and mountain views
Cairns is the perfect option if you’re staying in the city and want to squeeze a skydive into an already busy itinerary.
During the scenic flight, you’ll climb above the coastline, rainforest-covered mountains and the city itself, with views stretching towards the Great Barrier Reef. Then comes the main event: stepping out of the plane and experiencing freefall before floating back down beneath the parachute.
Skydive Australia operates the only tandem skydiving experience over Cairns itself, with a landing area south of the city. The relatively quick turnaround makes it possible to fit other activities into the same day.
Mission Beach: A beach landing to remember
About two hours south of Cairns, Mission Beach offers something a little different.
Imagine jumping from 15,000 feet, looking out over tropical islands, rainforest and a long stretch of golden coastline, then finishing your adventure with a landing directly on the beach.
That’s what makes Mission Beach such a popular skydiving destination. Beach landings are weather permitting, but when conditions allow, it’s a pretty unforgettable way to finish a jump.
Free return transfers from Cairns are available, making it an excellent full-day adventure even if you don’t have your own transport.
Airlie Beach: The Whitsundays from above
If you’re travelling further down Queensland’s coast, Airlie Beach is another fantastic place to tick skydiving off your bucket list.
Here, the scenery changes to the famous Whitsunday Islands, with their turquoise waters, tropical coastline and islands scattered across the horizon.
Skydive Australia offers jumps from up to 15,000 feet, as well as a shorter 8,000-foot option. It’s an excellent choice for anyone exploring the Whitsundays who wants to see the region from an entirely different perspective.
Bungy Jumping at AJ Hackett Skypark Cairns
If jumping out of a plane sounds a little too ambitious OR, wasn’t enough to scratch the adrenaline itch, how about jumping off a tower instead?
Just 20 minutes north of Cairns, tucked away in the tropical rainforest near Smithfield, you’ll find Skypark Cairns by AJ Hackett, home to Australia’s only bungy jumping operation!
Operating since 1990, Skypark has become one of the region’s most iconic adventure attractions, offering two very different ways to get your adrenaline pumping.
Bungy Jumping: 50 metres
The main attraction is the 50-metre bungy jump, where you’ll take the ultimate leap of faith from a purpose-built tower overlooking a natural lagoon surrounded by lush rainforest.
What makes this one particularly special is the choice of 16 different jump styles, from the classic forward dive to something a little more adventurous. You can even request a water touch, where your jump is adjusted so you briefly dip into the lagoon below!
And while 50 metres might not sound enormous compared with a 15,000-foot skydive, trust us, it feels a whole lot higher when you’re standing at the edge looking straight down.
Giant Jungle Swing: 45 metres
Not quite ready to take the plunge? The Giant Jungle Swing offers a different kind of thrill, and this one you can share with friends!
Designed for one, two or three people, the swing pulls you high above the rainforest before releasing you into a 45-metre descent, accelerating from 0 to 120 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.
It’s a fantastic option for couples, friends or anyone who’d prefer to share their screaming with somebody else.
